A Child's Future-When Should They Begin Thinking About Theirs
Coming from the stance of Human Growth and Development It would be great for them to start thinking about their future goals at around the age of 12. I know kids that knew what their careers were going to be in when they were in 1st grade. I also know that in 7th grade is when you get to choose your classes and discipline other than the CORE classes.
Scientifically there are other factors involved to help facilitate your child's planning for their future career. Those being Cognitive and Psychosocial. Genetics also plays a role in this but for this article I will be talking about Cognitive Development.
Cognitive
Cognition: of or pertaining to the mental processes of perception, memory, judgment, and reasoning, as contrasted with emotional and volitional processes
Cognitive development is the thought process. At the age of 12 years old a child is at the age of reasoning. They have the capabilities to know what is right from wrong and can think forward. They understand some consequences and can reason about their lives. At this point in time they communicate very well and can see their own future and the planning of it. Most know what it is that they want to do with their lives and plan accordingly. Some may need some help. It isn't wise to tell them what you want them to do but to allow them to use their own thought processes to help figure out a good game plan they can set up now.
They are at the stage known as Formal Operational Thought. They are able to build their own theories of things that are around them such as literature, morality, love, work and philosophy. It is at this stage they become better at thinking out things logically. According to Piaget's test results some do not get this logical thought process. Hmm, I can see this in some people. Their minds are like sponges. Keep filling them up with information. They will use it and thirst for more and more. During this time they can prepare themselves for future careers and build on it year to year past High School Graduation and beyond. It is good to get your child reading about all kinds of subjects and career possibilities. There are Career Tests that Middle/Junior High Schools students can take to see what careers they can go into based on the results of what he or she has provided on that test.
Moral Development is also taking place at the time in their young lives. Since they can reason and deduce what is right from what is wrong they can also come up with alternative solutions to problems they face. This is a very important step for future planning. By the age of 12-13 most kids reject conventional rules and have their own thoughts about how the world is supposed to work. It is in this time that parent should let them express themselves by allowing and promoting their abilities and mind to solving problems in their lives. To turn off their children at this stage would be detrimental to the mental health of the child. Parent's must take an active role when raising their children to become the best adult they can be.

A Mind is a terrible thing to waste. There have been children/teens who have written books on things never imagined they could do by their adult peers and many other things.
Help your child prepare for his or her future. They will depend on it, just as you have and do. A good article to read is Why We Did Not Pay For Our Children's College

Some people know exactly what they want to do when they are still small children, and other people never discover a special vocation, though they may do very well supporting themselves and raising a family. As parents, all we can do is help them discover who they are. The rest is up to them.
